Cafés/bars maintained stable current value and transaction value growth in 2019, despite a slight decline in outlet numbers. Health and wellness remains a strong trend in Norway, with operators prioritising local produce and consumers reducing meat consumption in order to reduce their carbon emissions.
The rise of e-commerce is having an adverse impact on both shopping centres and the foodservice outlets within them. However, specialist coffee and tea shops are taking share from self-service cafeterias and limited-service restaurants in such locations.
Although bars/pubs continued to see current value growth in 2019, this was negligible. Changing consumer habits have had a negative impact on bars/pubs, with the health and wellness trend and environmental concerns affecting sales.
After overtaking the Norwegian brand Kaffebrenneriet in terms of outlet numbers in 2017, the Swedish brand Espresso House then also took the lead in terms of value sales in 2018. It then strongly increased its lead in 2019, seeing growth in its value share, whilst Kaffebrenneriet saw a decline.
After many years of strong growth, Joe & The Juice saw a double-digit value sales decline in Norway in 2019. Suffering from the pressure of its previous aggressive expansion, it closed seven outlets, and there are concerns about the chain’s long-term sustainability.
Overall, cafés/bars remained an extremely fragmented category in 2019, with the vast majority of sales accounted for by independent operators. This is mainly due to the large number of independent bars/pubs and cafés, with no chained players present.
