Juice/smoothie bars looks set to be one of the strongest performers in cafés/bars over the forecast period thanks largely to rising health-consciousness amongst Bulgarian consumers. This trend should also continue to encourage operators in other categories to add healthier choices to their menus.
Chained specialist coffee and tea shops continued to benefit from the increasing preference for more sophisticated coffee varieties amongst Bulgarians in 2019, especially amongst young adults and middle-aged consumers in urban areas. Sustained investment in advertising support for leading international brands also bolstered the category’s performance, as did new outlet openings by global giant Starbucks.
The coffee culture in Bulgaria is gaining momentum and is helping diversify product and service offering. According to a poll conducted by Trend agency on coffee consumption and coffee culture in Bulgaria, commissioned by AmRest Coffee (representative of the Starbucks® chain in Bulgaria) in October 2019, 69% of Bulgarians drink at least one coffee per day, whilst young people like to experiment with flavours and aromas.
Cafés/bars remained highly fragmented in 2019, with independents dominating and chained players accounting for a very small share of total current value sales, transactions and outlet numbers. Nedelya, which competes in cafés, was the leading chain in value terms, followed by specialist coffee and tea shops operators Costa Coffee and Starbucks.
Starbucks also recorded value sales growth in 2019. This chain’s performance was bolstered by the opening of several new outlets, including in Varna and Sofia, with ongoing negotiations to expand the chain to other cities.
Following the acquisition by Coca-Cola, Costa Coffee recorded strong double-digit outlet and transaction growth in 2019 and further growth is anticipated over the forecast period. Costa Coffee branded products are to be sold in at least 10 of its 28 European markets, including Bulgaria, Greece, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Russia and Switzerland.
