After the initial peak in consumption in 2022 when COVID-19 restrictions were lifted in May, sales through bars/pubs started to tail off towards the end of the year as the threat of an economic crisis loomed large on the horizon. As such, the volume of transactions through bars/pubs is expected to stagnate in 2023 and 2024 and could even decline slightly as consumers are forced to exercise greater caution in their spending.
The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated some changes in consumer behaviour while it completely changed others. For example, in response to COVID-19 measures such as lockdowns, mobility restrictions and curfews, consumers started adopting new behaviours such as going out earlier, dining earlier and making more plans with friends during the daytime.

Some industry experts had expected that with the lifting of restrictions demand for home delivery and takeaway would decline as more people would prefer to eat-in again.
