In 2021, the Argentinian government incorporated cat food into the national programme, Precios Cuidados, whereby a “basket” of products, chosen by the government and leading companies, are sold at prices well below the market average in order to help consumers that cannot afford to pay the regular prices. Nestlé’s Gati and Cat Chow brands, which respectively lead economy and mid-priced dry cat food, were originally included in the programme, and more brands were expected to follow, but this did not happen.
Over the review period, local companies gained ground at the expense of multinationals because of changes in packaging and formulas and the launch of new products in the mid-priced and premium segments. In a period dominated by high inflation and decreased purchasing power, lower-priced alternatives offered by national companies will continue to attract many cat pet owners.
Private label penetration is still limited in cat food, although this could change in the short term. At present, private label options are concentrated in a few retailers, such as Dia with its eponymous brand, Changomás with Acuenta and Carrefour with Carrefour.
