Wet cat food remains popular among consumers, with many regarding it as the best nutrition as well as a treat for their cats. Wet cat food is traditionally the most popular variant in Ukraine, with higher retail volume sales than dry cat food.
Vest sp zoo’s brand Brit has rapidly gained share due to its dynamic expansion in all distribution channels, attractive price offers and novelty product launches such as dry cat food with probiotics for cats with gastrointestinal disorders and dry cat food for indoor cats with an anti-stress formulation. The brand promotes its pet food products as “prevention by nutrition” and develops treats that are functional snacks.
Digitalisation and consumer engagement in social media is growing in importance in 2021. Brands use social media to introduce innovations, announce discounts, organise competitions and provide gifts, as well as share useful information on pet care and feeding.
Unit prices of cat food increased during the review period due to local currency fluctuations and an increase in inflation. However, these price increases were negated by increased promotional activity by major brands/companies as they absorbed price increases and new brands used price discounts to attract customers.
Cat food buyers are becoming more demanding and attentive to the ingredients and country of origin of the pet food they purchase. There has, for example, been much discussion over the review period on forums about the country of origin of specific brands, as one brand may be produced in Poland and in France, and there are claims that the two offer different standards of quality.
Superfoods have a bright future in cat food in Ukraine over the forecast period and are in line with the natural and health trends, for example Nestlé-Ukraine TOV’s ONE with spirulina and Suzirja NVP TOV’s Gimpet GimCat Superfood range with exotic fruits and berries in wet cat food and treats.
