There is a growing tendency in Colombia towards keeping cats as pets. Similar to smaller dog breeds, cats are easier to keep in smaller spaces.

Record levels of animal adoption drive cat food sales

There was an all-time high in animal adoptions in 2018 according to the Instituto de Bienestar y Protección Animal de Bogotá. This is indicative of the considerable interest in pet ownership in the country and rising awareness of the importance of reducing stray pet populations, where people are becoming interested in adopting older strays over and above young cats in order to provide them with a new home.

Macroeconomic uncertainty could indirectly benefit forecast growth

In the first quarter of 2018, the Presidential election resulted in stagnation in the economy. However, over the forecast period, cat food is expected to see dynamic growth, in excess of dog food, as cats will increasingly gain popularity.
