Small mammal/reptile food saw the fastest value growth for the third consecutive year in 2019, further driven by the increasing popularity of rabbits among the younger Taiwanese, especially by young female consumers that are choosing rabbits as another choice for pets besides cats and dogs. A rabbit is often a child’s first introduction to pet ownership, before moving onto larger pets as they grow up.
In 2020, volume growth of bird food saw a slight uptick, but remained stagnant, a trend seen over the review period in line with a noticeable decline in the overall pet bird population the country as increasing numbers of bird species are being listed as protected species and cannot be legally sold as pets in Taiwan. Among all bird types, there has been a more significant increase in the parrot ownership in Taiwan.
Although fish food continued to hold the highest value and volume shares within “other” pet food in 2020, growth is slowing down due to approaching saturation and slower growth in the fish population. Smaller living spaces in Taiwan also are making it harder to have a larger fish tank.
More small mammal owners are young consumers, and they comprise an internet-savvy generation that looks for information online. They fully understand the importance of feeding hay to small mammals like rabbits or guinea pigs.
Unlike cats or dogs, which are easier to care for, fish require more professional knowledge and have higher maintenance needs for which fish owners often seek help from store owners. Therefore, pet stores remain the main channel for fish food.
While imported brands are expected to increase their market shares by gaining popularity among younger bird owners, the domestic manufacturer Ho Mei Chien remains the biggest player within the bird food category, and it is increasingly popular younger bird owners as well. The second- ranked player Fwusow Industry, on the other hand, has continued to see its value share decline as Ho Mei Chien and imported brands gain more brand awareness and market share.
