PROSPECTS
Limited-service restaurants posts the strongest growth in consumer foodservice

Limited-service restaurants posted the best performance in consumer foodservice in 2018, with the strongest current value increase amongst all channels. This was supported by stronger expansion in outlet numbers compared with other channels.

Convenience, affordability and differentiation are key attributes

Limited service-restaurants are perfectly positioned to meet consumers’ changing behaviour in Romania. Quick service, to-go and eat-in options, as well as optimised locations, make all categories within limited-service restaurants very convenient.

Third-party ordering and delivery services are both a challenge and an opportunity

2018 brought an explosion of third-party ordering and delivery services operating in Romania. Fighting their own battles to gain share, these companies are investing important resources in educating consumers, increasing ordering frequency and creating a new foodservice sales channel.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
McDonald’s leads and sees another year of double-digit growth

McDonald’s remained the value leader in limited-service restaurants in 2018, challenged only by KFC, with all other players recording much lower sales. As in previous years, through this performance the US brand also ranked first in overall consumer foodservice.

An increasing number of local brands have a voice in the channel

Limited-service restaurants sees the strongest penetration of franchises within consumer foodservice. What is encouraging is that whilst in the past international brands dominated not only sales but also availability, nowadays the picture is different.

Burger King announces its return

One of the big announcements in late 2018 was Burger King’s announced return to Romania. Although not providing a date for re-entry, the franchise rights for several CEE countries were acquired by AmRest Holdings, one of the big operators in the industry.
