Hair care appliances saw a retail volume decline in 2021, which is set to continue in 2022, in a process of normalisation after seeing strong growth in 2020, when the closure of non-essential businesses and home seclusion prompted customers to purchase products such as hair clippers and beard trimmers. Hair styling appliances, on the other hand, were left behind in 2020 compared with hair and beard trimmers, due to limited social occasions.
The body shavers category, which consists of women’s shavers, men’s shavers (wet and dry) and depilators, is expected to see negligible volume growth in the forecast period. The category is relatively mature in the UK, and in particular products intended for women continue to face fierce competition from longer-term solutions such as waxing, laser hair removal and IPL appliances.
Oral care appliances is expected to see growth in both retail volume and current value terms in the forecast period, driven mainly by electric toothbrush units and other oral care appliances. This is as UK consumers continue to switch from manual toothbrushes to electric toothbrushes to improve their oral hygiene, partly as consumers follow dentist recommendations.
