Wireless speakers increasingly dominate retail volume sales of portable players in Spain. They are relatively cheap and very portable – they are easy to move from room to room and can be used both inside and outside.
Retail volume sales of portable media players declined throughout the review period. Both portable multimedia players and other portable media players are being cannibalised by smartphones, which local consumers increasingly use to stream music, films and TV shows.
Retail volume sales of e-readers also appear to be in long-term decline, not only due to cannibalisation by smartphones (these tend to be quite popular for reading among young adults) but also because e-books and other types of e-publications are perceived by many as being expensive in comparison to paper alternatives. Moreover, the replacement cycle of e-readers tends to be quite long, particularly in comparison to smartphones, as the technology of the former is relatively mature and many local consumers are happy with a fairly basic level of functionality – they will use their e-reader to read books and a smartphone for everything else.
The dominance of portable players by wireless speakers will continue to deepen during the forecast period. However, demand for these products is maturing, with growth in retail volume sales set to be quite modest during the forecast period as a whole – particularly in comparison with the review period.
Cannibalisation by smartphones with larger screens will continue to depress demand for e-readers over the course of the forecast period. However, the annual rate of decline in retail volume sales will be somewhat slower than in the review period.
E-commerce will account for close to a quarter of retail volume sales of smart speakers during 2021, and it will continue to grow in importance as a distribution channel for portable players during the forecast period. The pandemic has helped to make local consumers more comfortable shopping online, and a growing number of specialist electronics and appliances retail chains now offer e-commerce as they shift towards an omnichannel model in an effort to counter the competitive threat posed by e-commerce marketplaces like Amazon.
