Although lockdown ended in Egypt at the end of June 2020, working and studying from home will continue throughout 2021 and will therefore be a major trend shaping computer and peripherals throughout the year. This will be particularly beneficial for tablets which performed extraordinarily well in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, laptops witnessed a positive impact to an extent as in some cities, laptop sales surged dramatically around the beginning of the new school year in 2020 compared with the same period in 2019. This was largely due to the shift to remote schooling.
Volume sales of monitors increased as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and this trend will continue in 2021. Some consumers are now using more than one monitor for the same desktop for better efficiency and meeting work needs.
The dominant retail product area of laptops is set to influence the overall performance of computers and peripherals moving forward, with sales set to record further retail volume growth from 2022 onwards. This is likely to be driven by several factors, namely the further penetration of more affordable laptops, and the fact that an increasing number of consumers may continue to adopt work from home measures as businesses adapt how they work and move away from traditional office environments, a trend which was already beginning to emerge prior to the pandemic.
The Egyptian government has contracted Samsung to localise the tablet industry and this is expected to come into effect over the forecast period. The agreement stipulates the establishment of a factory in Beni Suef with investments of $30 million.
A push by the government as part of its National Sustainable Development Strategy Egypt – 2030, which aims to create a digital society and build a strong digital economy will also support greater usage in general for electronic devices such as laptops as consumers increasingly go paperless. This will also exacerbate ongoing declines for monitors and printers, while demand for desktops will continue to be driven by businesses that require high-specification features for work purposes.
