Having surged by almost 40% during 2020, the rate of growth in retail current value sales of computers and peripherals will slow significantly but remain vigorous during 2021. The work from home and study from home trends initiated by the pandemic will remain the main drivers of growth, with restrictions on movement tightened during the early part of the year as a result of a resurgence in the rate of COVID-19 infections.
Many office workers are set to continue to work from home for much of the year, supporting demand for computers and peripherals, particularly laptops and monitors. While many of these bought laptops during 2020, some delayed their purchase until 2021 because they could not get the model that they wanted due to stock shortages.
Laptops and tablets will continue to account for the bulk of retail volume sales of computers and peripherals during 2021, with very limited demand for desktops. Laptops are particularly popular with both workers and students because they are flexible and portable, in addition to offering most of the computing power of a desktop at a significantly lower price.
With the threat posed by the pandemic set to ease during 2022, as more people receive COVID-19 vaccinations, restrictions on movement are likely to be eased, with children set to return to school and employees to their workplaces. With many local consumers having purchased laptops and tablets during 2020 and 2021, there will be a dearth of replacement purchases – particularly during the early part of the forecast period.
Retail current value sales of peripherals will be flat during the forecast period as a whole, with an increase in unit price offsetting a decline in retail volume sales. Many local consumers purchased new monitors and printers during 2020 and (to a lesser extent) in 2021, as the pandemic forced them to work or study from home.
Laptops will remain the top performer in terms of both retail current value sales and retail volume growth during the forecast period. On the other hand, demand for desktops and especially tablets will be quite weak.
