Having declined for six years in a row, retail current value sales of computers and peripherals surged during 2020. This was primarily due to a dramatic rise in the number of people working from home due to COVID-19 restrictions, though some consumers also purchased certain products to ensure they could maintain contact with friends and family via such services as Zoom and Skype or to improve their gaming experience during a period when many had a lot of free time at home.
Hewlett-Packard France will continue to have the largest retail volume share in computers and peripherals during 2021 due to its strong presence across the category. It will retain its leading position in laptops, where its performance should be lifted by the launch of such products as the 5G-enabled HP Elite Dragonfly G2 and the HP Spectre x360 15T – a convertible model featuring an Intel Core i7-1065G7 processor, a 4K touch display and reduced borders for a larger screen size.
E-Commerce will continue to grow in importance as a distribution channel for computers and peripherals during 2021, albeit at a much slower pace than in 2020. Even at the beginning of the review period, e-commerce had already surpassed electronics and appliance specialist retailers and hypermarkets to become the largest distribution channel for computers and peripherals in terms of retail volume share.
Retail current value sales of computers and peripherals will decline during both 2022 and the forecast period as a whole. Monitors and laptops will be the top performers, desktops and tablets the worst.
Given the limited potential for volume sales growth during the forecast period, many companies in computers and peripherals will continue to try to boost value sales via the launch of more sophisticated and expensive products. In particular, manufacturers are expected to concentrate on developing products that marry cutting-edge innovation with design features that provide greater convenience and enhance the user experience.
E-commerce will continue to grow as a distribution channel for computers and peripherals during the forecast period. Indeed, it appears set to dominate retail volume sales.
