Retail current value sales of computers and peripherals expanded at their fastest rate in six years during 2020. In March of that year, the government introduced a raft of measures aimed at slowing the spread of COVID-19, including one of the strictest lockdowns in Europe.
Four players – Lenovo Spain SRL, Samsung Electronics Iberia SA, HP Printing & Computing Solutions SL and Apple Computer España SA – will account for around half of retail current value sales of computers and peripherals during 2021. Apple had been losing retail value share during the review period even before the onset of the pandemic, but this trend accelerated during 2020.
COVID-19 restrictions mean that bars and restaurants continue to close early in many regions of Spain during 2021, while nightclubs, concerts and other events remain very restricted. As a result, the shift to home entertainment that began in 2020 remains a significant trend.
The rate of growth in retail current value sales of computers and peripherals will slow significantly during 2022 and be little better than flat for the remainder of the forecast period. With so many computers purchased by local consumers during the latter part of the review period due to the pandemic, there will be relatively few replacement purchases in the forecast period – particularly during the early part of it.
Laptops will remain the top performer during the forecast period as a whole, with retail current value sales of both desktops and tablets falling. The latter are being cannibalised by smartphones and the former by laptops, which are cheaper and more portable.
Led by Amazon.es, e-commerce was already established as a significant distribution channel for computers and peripherals even before the onset of the pandemic.
