During the review period prior to the onset of the pandemic, retail volume sales of computers and peripherals had been in steady decline in the Netherlands. But they grew at a double-digit rate during 2020, as COVID-19 restrictions led to many local consumers either working or studying from home, with demand for laptops, tablets and monitors particularly strong.
Even before the onset of the pandemic, e-commerce had been steadily growing in importance as a distribution channel for computers and peripherals, largely at the expense of electronics and appliance specialist retailers. As the most densely populated country in Europe, the Netherlands is particularly well suited to e-commerce.
While demand for computers and peripherals from consumers will remain very strong during 2021, business volume sales will decline. Many businesses bought computers and peripherals to facilitate their employees working from home during 2020, and this surge in demand will recede in 2021.
After two years of exceptionally strong demand, retail volume sales of computers and peripherals will fall at their sharpest rate in more than a decade during 2022 and continue to decline for the remainder of the forecast period. With so many local consumers having purchased new devices during 2020 and 2021, there will be fewer replacement purchases during the early part of the forecast period in particular.
The decline in retail volume sales of desktop computers will be particularly steep during the forecast period, as more and more local consumers substitute laptops or even tablets for these. Desktops will increasingly be the domain of gamers and hobbyists who value the power and upgradability that they offer.
Apart from desktops, tablets will be the worst performer in computers and peripherals in terms of retail volume sales growth during the forecast period, with the growing popularity of both large-display smartphones and convertible laptops playing a significant role in this. More and more Dutch consumers will perceive tablets as superfluous, finding smartphones sufficient for such activities as web browsing, gaming and viewing content.
