Dishwashers was already gaining growth momentum prior to the pandemic although its penetration rate of Chilean households remains low overall due to being deemed non-essential by many local consumers. Nevertheless, with Chileans forced to spend prolonged periods of time at home, resulting in greater frequency of cooking and the need to juggle remote working, child care and household chores, some consumers have taken the opportunity to invest in a dishwasher to make their lives easier.
BSH Electrodomésticos SAC with its Bosch brand is set to retain its overall lead of dishwashers in 2021, although it continues to lose ground to its closest and more dynamic competitors CTI Cía Tecno Industrial SA (Fensa and Mademsa for Electrolux) and Midea Group, with the latter only entering the category in 2019.
Dishwashers continues to hold a low penetration rate within Chilean households as these appliances are perceived as consuming high levels of water and energy, the majority of which is on heating the water. Technological improvements are leading to the launch of dishwasher models that select the most suitable water temperature and include wash programmes that reuse heat generated during the rinse process or drying, without having to generate further energy.
E-commerce continued to gain notable retail volume share from the leading distribution channel for dishwashers, department stores, at the end of the review period. While traditionally, Chileans like to inspect these goods prior to purchase, they are becoming increasingly confident in placing online orders, driven by the convenience of home delivery, competitive prices and a wide range of models and brands to choose from, in addition to being able to read online reviews.
With low penetration of local households, dishwashers is at a relatively early stage in its development in Chile. Dishwashers are mainly positioned as a time- and effort-saving appliance, mainly purchased by mid- and upper- income households due to their relatively high unit price.
Dishwashers in Chile remains an emerging category within consumer appliances, as it is considered a luxury product, especially due to the cost of water and electricity with which it is generally associated. Several companies have made efforts to introduce technological innovations that can help reduce these costs.

A dishwasher is a device for cleaning crockery and cutlery. Freestanding models are commonly available in full-size, slimline and compact variants. Built-in machines can be fully integrated (completely hidden by a door front and have their controls at the top of the dishwasher door on the inside), semi-integrated which are covered by a matching kitchen door up to the height drawer, which are usually built in at chest height to make loading easier.See All of Our Definitions
