Having declined during both 2019 and 2020, retail volume sales of dishwashers exhibited their fastest rate of growth in more than a decade during 2021. Some sales were shifted from 2020 to 2021 due to COVID-19.
Retail value sales of dishwashers exhibited double-digit growth in 2021, largely driven by a significant increase in unit price. This was largely the result of supply-chain issues, including increased transportation costs and (most significantly) a shortage of semiconductors, which made it difficult many manufacturers to meet consumer demand.
Due to their busy lives, more Canadians are feeling time-pressed, especially women and single parents. Pre-pandemic, time-crunch was mostly due to increasing work hours and longer daily commutes, with most Canadians spending more than one hour per day commuting.
Retail volume sales of dishwashers will remain robust during the forecast period as a whole. The penetration rate of dishwashers (around two thirds of local households had one in 2021) is somewhat lower than that of such major appliances as refrigeration appliances and laundry appliances (as the latter two are regarded as more essential), so demand for the former is less dependent on replacement purchases.
Although supply shortages of key components are set to ease, there will also be strong growth in retail current value sales of dishwashers during the forecast period. The growing popularity of connected appliances will play a role in this.
Sustainability is set to play an increasingly important role in the purchasing decisions of local consumers, particularly younger ones. Many new dishwashers have programmes which allow them to operate more efficiently, such as “eco-cycle,” air dry or adjustable temperature settings.

A dishwasher is a device for cleaning crockery and cutlery. Freestanding models are commonly available in full-size, slimline and compact variants. Built-in machines can be fully integrated (completely hidden by a door front and have their controls at the top of the dishwasher door on the inside), semi-integrated which are covered by a matching kitchen door up to the height drawer, which are usually built in at chest height to make loading easier.See All of Our Definitions
