During the forecast period, edible oils are set to remain absolutely essential ingredients in virtually all Romanian kitchens, with sunflower oil set to remain the dominant category due to its status as the most important type of edible oil in the country. The commodity status of sunflower or is a reflection of its entrenched position in traditional Romanian cuisine, with demand set to remain robust despite strong unit price growth due to high inflation.
The forecast period is expected to see robust sales growth in other edible oil as consumers come increasingly interested in variance such as pumpkin seed oil, grape seed oil and walnut oil, among others, all of which are presented as being healthier options than sunflower oil and its various mainstream alternatives. While demand for sunflower oil and other mainstream options is already quite mature, there is still huge room for further growth in sales of other edible oil as these types of edible oils are still niche products, although demand is growing, especially among affluent young urban professionals, who tend to be more open to novelty, especially in the area of health and wellness.
Private label’s strong position in edible oils means that it is unlikely that any of the leading brands in the category will be able to present any serious challenge to the first rank that private label has occupied for many years. The enduring popularity of private label is based mainly on the positive perception of private label products in the key category of sunflower oil, a group of products that are seen as requiring only low levels of sophistication on the part of manufacturers, which means that consumer demand remains focused on low prices and regular promotions.
