Following a long contraction period in volume demand for edible oils, the rate of decline has eased in 2019. Value sales, on the other hand, experienced a steady recovery in the same period and showed a strong performance in 2019.

Olive oil records healthy growth despite negative press and consumer health concerns

Olive oil recorded a positive performance, however, in 2019, growth was hampered by findings from the bureau of food safety. Following an investigation from Europol, in which large quantities of fake virgin olive oil were discovered in EU, Slovenian bureau of food safety did similar investigation on their own domestic products.

Health concerns boost sales of olive oil while hampering rapeseed oil and sunflower oil

The health and wellness trend is influencing edible oils and will shape the future of product development. As well as consumers paying more attention to nutrition, calories and labels, the government announced in 2019 that items can only use 2 grams of trans fat per 100 grams of total fat.

In 2019, Univerzal Commerce Ljubljana introduced Clearly Canola Oil and Clearly Canola Oil-Based Cooking Spray non-GMO. These were daring innovations from the player, particularly as spray oil is not a standard format in Slovenia, but is a clear response to the health and wellness trend.

Government’s quality control benefits private label options which are of a satisfactory standard

The government investigation that revealed unsatisfactory edible oils benefited private label in 2019, as private label items were exempt from the list. The exception to this was Dm Bio – however, the share of the player was too low to have an overall impact on private label share.
