Edible oils registered a double-digit value increase in value and volume growth in 2020, as people cooked more at home during the pandemic lockdowns. With society opening up gradually in 2021, there is less home cooking, with a decline in both value and volume sales.
Vereinigte Fettwarenindustrie leads in edible oils in 2021, thanks to its wide range of edible oils within olive oil, rapeseed oil and sunflower oil. The company has a range of different brands including Bona, Kronen, Ceres, Estermann, Osolio fit4Life and Frivassa.
Health and wellness continues to impact edible oils. Within edible oils, olive oil continues to account for the largest share of value sales.
Edible oils will register a muted performance over the forecast period. The cooking at home trend will maintain value and volume sales, but will not see the highs registered during the pandemic and with foodservice gradually returning to full capacity, this will dampen value and volume sales.
Buoyed by the trend of consumers increasingly turning to locally produced food products, rapeseed oil—widely produced in Austria and sold domestically via numerous local brands—will post the strongest constant value growth over the forecast period. Rapeseed oil also benefits from its reputation as being a very healthy edible oil which can be used for both hot and cold dishes.
During the review period, Austrians placed great trust in private label brands such as Spar and Ja! Natürlich. Retailers’ private labels offered not only affordable prices for edible oils but also made great strides in increasing the sophistication of their products and improving their quality.
