Overall retail volume sales of televisions continued to decline in 2019, influenced by the negative performance of the largest category of LCD TVs. Despite, the increasing penetration of internet smart TVs within the LCD format, the need for a physical television as a mode of entertainment is increasingly dwindling due to the move towards digital media in Hong Kong.
Research and development resources of companies are now focusing on offering consumers larger television screens for a more impressive television viewing experience. This has led to an increasing number of televisions being launched with a 42-inch screen size and above.
With consumers becoming increasingly concerned about the connectivity of a television as much as its sharpness and colour accuracy, internet smart TVs are continuing to gain ground. In Hong Kong, major content consumption is via streaming services such as Netflix, YouTube, Apple TV and Google Video.
Samsung Electronics Hong Kong Co Ltd strengthened its leadership of televisions in Hong Kong in 2019, gaining further retail volume share from smaller players, in addition to its leading position within the largest category of LCD TVs. Samsung televisions offer sleeker designs compared to rival LG, although both brands still offer premium image technology compared to Sharp and Panasonic, which continued to dwindle in popularity at the end of the review period.
The two strongest performers within LCD TVs in terms of positive retail volume sales were Toshiba from Hisense (Hong Kong) Co Ltd and TCL. These brands are highly prominent in the economy end of the category, and mostly offer smaller screen sizes of below 42 inches.
While LG continued to dominate retail volume sales of OLED TVs due to first-mover advantage, it lost further share to an increasing number of competitors entering the category including Sony Bravia and Panasonic. This has led to decreasing prices for OLED TVs, making them more affordable.
