Despite the positive and better than expected performance of travel in 2022, the recovery of the industry in Germany is predicted to be protracted, with inbound arrivals unlikely to fully recover by the end of the forecast period, although outbound departure numbers are set to return to pre-pandemic levels by 2027. Furthermore, despite predictions for domestic trips taken and domestic spending (at constant 2022 prices) to recover over the forecast period, overall value of travel is likely to remain lagging (at constant 2022 prices) compared to 2019 levels due to the significant impact of 2020’s drop.
While the number of domestic trips taken has continued to notably improve in 2022, with many Germans already preferring to travel within the country for their holidays prior to the pandemic, their appreciation of warmer climates in South Europe is likely to continue. Countries such as Spain, Italy and Greece are still among the most popular destinations for German tourists due to their welcoming climate, valued coasts and affordable prices compared to Northern Europe.
