PROSPECTS
Warm summer boosts last-minute domestic trips

The long, warmer-than-expected European summer in 2018 had an overall positive effect on tourism flows in Germany and elsewhere. During the summer months, consumers took more spontaneous travel opportunities, often weekend city trips, for shorter durations.

Cruises more popular than ever

Cruises continued to be a bright spot in Germany, especially river cruises, which continue to be exceedingly popular with consumers. Many of the growing river cruise options span multiple days or weeks and take passengers to several destination cities.

Germany as a destination: continued positive outlook

Inbound arrivals in Germany continued to grow in 2019, although at a slower pace than in 2018. While continued growth in inbound arrivals to Germany is supported by a growing number of international visitors, chief among them from the Netherlands, Switzerland and the US, the greatest actual growth is being seen among domestic travellers.
