Executive Summary

Sep 2019
PROSPECTS
Healthy growth across travel and tourism, with inbound attracting more affluent consumers

Inbound arrivals to Hungary continued to record positive growth in 2019, with traditionally strong source markets from Western Europe such as Austria, Germany and the UK remaining crucial in generating high volumes of visitors. Inbound receipts continued to record ongoing current value growth in 2019, with expenditure on shopping, lodging and activities experiencing particularly strong increases as operators attempted to attract more affluent visitors who appreciate more specific treatment or fine-dining options.

Extended weekend breaks benefit ongoing domestic leisure trips

Domestic leisure trips continued to record steady growth with tourism amongst locals continuing to be an important source of revenue for Hungary, particularly in the regions that are not familiar to foreign travellers. The majority of guest nights outside of Budapest are generated by Hungarian tourists with popular areas of Northern Great Plain, Lake Balaton and Southern Great Plain continuing to enjoy strong growth.

Opening up of direct routes between China and Hungary will help support high potential of this inbound market

Although arrivals from China remained low in number compared to major source markets, the country continues to offer high growth potential as new direct flights connect Hungary and the most populous Chinese cities such as Shanghai (through Shanghai Airlines starting from June 2019) and Beijing. In addition, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) has also agreed licences for flights to connect China and Budapest (through Xi’an, Chongqing and Shenzhen), with the opening of these routes expected over the early part of the forecast period.
