PROSPECTS
Outbound Mexicans are being targeted by several countries

Towards the end of the review period, several countries were engaged in explicit efforts to attract the attention of outbound Mexicans at a time of increasing outbound departures and outgoing tourist receipts. Among the countries that have recently engaged in efforts to lure Mexican travellers are Canada, Cuba, the US, Spain, France and Russia.

Affordable domestic tourism packages are developed for less affluent local consumers

2019 saw the Mexican Ministry of Tourism launch two new projects to promote domestic travel and tourism amongst lower income demographics. The first of these, “Sonrisas por México” (Smiles for Mexico), offers free trips to people in several cities who are considered to be among the most vulnerable segments, including elderly people and single parents within the lowest income segments.

China the new focus of external promotional efforts

With China widely regarded as the new frontier of the global travel and tourism market, the Mexican Ministry of Tourism recently announced that tourists from China would be among the primary targets of promotional efforts. In particular, higher-income segments of the Chinese population are being targeted as Mexico’s travel and tourism stakeholders seek not only to increase inbound tourism flows over the forecast period, but also to generate increases in the amounts of money being spent by foreign visitors while they are in the country.
