Executive Summary

Sep 2019
PROSPECTS
Inbound and outbound travel heavily influenced by exchange rates

A concern for the Argentinian economy is the massive exit of money in US dollars without a counterpart in income. During the years of Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner’s presidency, until the end of 2015, a tax of 35% was placed on foreign expenditure as a measure to contain the exit of money under her government.

Decentralisation widens the scope for tourism

Whilst Buenos Aires remains a perennial favourite for inbound tourists to Argentina with its wide range of cultural, gastronomic and recreational offers, the decentralisation of air routes to more provincial cities, such as Córdoba, Mendoza and Rosario is leading to increasing relevance of these areas for both inbound and outbound travellers, with strong growth in overall passenger numbers recorded in Cordoba International Airport, Cataratas del Iguazu International Airport and Ezeiza International Airport, among others, in 2019 as a result. Various regions of Argentina are beginning to focus on and promote their various strengths to tourists, both international and domestic.

Argentina promotes itself on Alibaba, driving growth in arrivals from China

China’s huge population and expanding middle class, which are increasingly embracing the joys of international travel, are becoming obvious targets for many countries in terms of attracting inbound arrivals from the country. In 2017, the President of Argentina signed a memorandum of understanding with Jack Ma, the Executive Chairman of digital shopping platform, Alibaba.
