PROSPECTS
Arrivals take a hit from the anti-extradition bill protests

After a controversial Extradition Law Amendment Bill was proposed in March 2019, an ongoing series of demonstrations started in Hong Kong, with hundreds of thousands of people participating in a number of organised rallies throughout the territory. The movement gained traction in June and slowly started evolving into an anti-government movement, with protesters outlining several key demands beyond the removal of the proposed bill, such as investigations into police misconduct and democratic reforms.

Infrastructure projects expand options for inbound arrivals, with third-tier Chinese cities a major source of visitors

Mainland Chinese tourists continued to constitute the backbone of Hong Kong inbound tourism in 2019. With the completion of both the Hong Kong-Macau-Zhuhai bridge (HMZB) and the High Speed Rail line connecting Hong Kong with Guangzhou and Shenzhen, the options for these inbound tourists were expanded in 2019, cutting journey times by half; Guangzhou is now reachable in under 50 minutes compared to a two-hour trip previously.

Need to diversify from a shopping paradise

Since the opening of the Disneyland Resort in 2005, Hong Kong has seen no new notable tourist attraction openings, which could hinder the potential future growth of tourism in the city. Although shopping remains one of the major attractions for mainland Chinese tourists, the rise of online shopping as well as the search for authentic experiences by the millennial generation could diminish Hong Kong’s allure as a shopping paradise.
