The VAT rate on tourism and hospitality was increased in 2019, rising from 9% to 13.5%.

In 2019, adventure tourism surged in popularity as Irish tourism providers tapped into the growing millennial driven demand for new and unique experiences. Sea kayaking, surfing, diving, trail running (hiking mixed with running) are all available activities in Ireland, and each can be in enjoyed within the unique and unspoiled environment of the country.

Growth in long-haul visitors is set to continue

In early 2011 the Irish tourist authorities recognised Ireland’s dependence on the UK as a source destination and put in place a strategy to diversify Ireland’s source destination mix. This prescient strategy was driven by the recognition that an adverse impact on travel from the UK would have a disproportionate impact on the Irish tourist industry.
