Executive Summary

Jul 2019
PROSPECTS
Overall category growth will be limited by factors affecting tobacco as a whole

Over the forecast period, most areas of cigars, cigarillos and smoking tobacco will continue declining in retail volume terms. Growth will be limited as the key issue is the overall drop in smoking prevalence in Germany, which continues its downward trend.

Fine-cut tobacco still remains popular with Germans

Fine-cut tobacco retained a very strong position in tobacco overall, with per capita consumption in Germany still among the highest globally. One driver of fine-cut tobacco sales is that consumers are continuing to trade down and switch from buying cigarettes to roll their own.

Waterpipe tobacco becomes increasingly prominent

Pipe tobacco was the best performing category in volume and value terms in 2018, driven by a continuous increase in waterpipe tobacco. The strong growth of waterpipe tobacco can be attributed to the continued rise in popularity of shisha-bars in Germany, partly driven by the influx of immigrants from the Middle East.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Reemtsma challenged by Pöschl Tabak in fine-cut tobacco

Reemtsma still remains the leading player in fine-cut tobacco with its strongest selling brand JPS, but Pöschl Tabak is pushing for the leading position thanks to its two popular brands Pueblo and Red Bull. Pueblo posted strong growth in 2018 and was the fastest-growing brand within fine-cut tobacco.

Dannemann remains the leading brand in cigars and cigarillos

Solely thanks to its strong leadership in cigarillos, Dannemann continued to lead cigars and cigarillos in 2018. Dannemann’s main brand Moods is synonymous with cigarillos for many smokers in Germany and enjoys widespread availability.
