Executive Summary

Jul 2019
PROSPECTS
Cigars enjoys premium image amongst affluent consumers

The smaller category of cigars continued to record steady demand in 2018, driven by the growing subculture of cigar smokers in Israel towards the end of the review period. An increasing number of smoking lounges are emerging which has increased awareness amongst consumers, while cigar tourism to Cuba and Nicaragua is expanding expertise and variety in specialist stores.

Cigarillos offers sophistication to consumers unable to afford cigars

Cigarillos also recorded steady retail volume growth despite continuing strong growth in its unit price, resulting in a much higher increase in current value terms compared to volume in 2018. Cigarillos remains a popular alternative to cigars for consumers who are either unable to afford the latter or have less time to smoke them, as cigars burn slower.

Fine cut tobacco to be hit with strong tax hike

Smoking tobacco continued to record positive retail volume growth in 2018, driven by the performance of the larger category of fine cut tobacco. The product offers consumers greater value for money as it provides a more affordable option to packaged cigarettes, as they can roll their own cigarettes with tobacco and papers.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Leading player Dubek loses share to multinationals

Dubek continued to lead both cigars and cigarillos, and smoking tobacco in 2018, due to the popularity in the latter of its leading fine cut tobacco brand Bali Shag. However, the company’s reliance on one brand in this category led to it losing retail volume share to Globrands and Philip Morris, in a similar situation to cigarettes, which offer a higher number of brands.

Highly fragmented landscape for cigars

Cigars remained a highly fragmented landscape with leading player Devidas Group Ltd continuing to gain retail volume share from its nearest competitor Esh-Li Cigars & Tobacco Ltd, while the combined share of “others” was highest. The leader has benefited from strong sales for premium brands Villiger, Montecristo, Cohiba and Romeo y Julieta, distributing the latter three for Corporación Habanos SA.

Likely declines for some fine cut tobacco brands could benefit pipe tobacco

With changes to fine cut tobacco following strong tax hikes in 2019, there will be inevitable consequences for some brands in this category. On the other hand, this could be to the benefit of pipe tobacco brands, including Captain Black from Lane Ltd (for Scandinavian Tobacco Group A/S), Mac Baren from Esh-Li Cigars & Tobacco Ltd (for Mac Baren Tobacco Co A/S) and Dunhill for British American Tobacco, which all recorded strong retail volume growth in 2018.
