Two of the categories to have been most affected since the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020 have been cigarettes and fine cut tobacco, which have not been able to recover their pre-pandemic levels. Imports of these products have fallen considerably, which is a clear indicator of how severely the sector has been affected.
With COVID-19 related restrictions on mobility and the operation of retail outlets having been eased further, and the possibility for people to meet in social settings, cigar consumption saw a dramatic upturn in 2021. In addition, there was the fact that the easing of pandemic related measures led to increased imports of products from Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and Colombia.
Cigars, cigarillos and smoking tobacco is a niche category and consumers in Peru do not have many options when looking to purchase such products. La Nueva Casa del Fumador and Casa del Habano remain the main channels where consumers can purchase products in this category, while supermarkets and online stores are less strongly represented channels.
From 2022 onwards, demand for cigars, cigarillos and smoking tobacco is set to normalise, translating to moderate growth over the forecast period. With COVID-19 related restrictions having been eased, Peru’s affluent cigar smokers are resuming their habit with gusto.
The Peruvian tobacco market is dominated by cigarette consumption, with the other forms of tobacco consumption remaining limited to certain spaces and segments. In the case of cigars, it is limited to high socioeconomic levels, while in the case of smoking tobacco, the consumption of pipe and rolling cigarettes is very limited.
There is significant potential for the development of e-commerce in cigars and cigarillos during the forecast period. Towards the end of the review period and particularly during the COVID-19 crisis, there was an increase in sales via the online channel through sites such as Mercado Libre and Peruvian e-commerce site Linio.
