Cigars and cigarillos were hugely impacted by the 2020 COVID-19 restrictions, with volume sales falling by more than a half. In 2021, with society gradually opening up, there was a modest recovery, with volume sales increasing by a quarter.
There were no changes in the competitive landscape, with Cruz Canela & Trust GB continuing to dominate in terms of volume sales, accounting for nearly half of volume sales in cigars and dominating in cigarillos. It offers the top three most popular brand in both cigars and cigarillos, that is Romeo y Julieta, Montecristo and Cohiba, all of which are Cuban.
Volume sales continued to be relatively low in Costa Rica in 2021. Beyond tourists, cigar and cigarillo smoking remained the preserve of a small number of affluent consumers, who could afford the high unit prices of these products in their search of sophistication and status.
Cigars and cigarillos will register moderate volume growth over the forecast period, though it will still remain a niche product area, targeted at higher income consumers. Distribution is also limited and this also stifles growth.
It is mainly the older generation that purchase cigars and cigarillos In Costa Rica. Therefore, the consumer base is expected to shrink over the forecast period.
A key consumer bases of cigars and cigarillos is foreign tourists, particularly at airport duty free outlets. With foreign tourists expected to travel once again to Costa Rica over the forecast period, as COVID-19 restrictions are fully lifted, this will support volume sales over the forecast period.
