Cigars and cigarillos maintained solid retail volume growth in 2020, with an even stronger rate of increase than seen the previous year, despite the tough economic conditions in the country due to COVID-19. Cigarillos in particular saw a dynamic increase, as the ban on flavoured cigarettes and fine cut tobacco from May 2020 led some smokers to switch to cigarillos, as these were still allowed to contain flavours.
Smoking tobacco saw much stronger retail volume growth in 2020 than in the previous year, with fine cut tobacco driving growth. More smokers shifted from cigarettes to cheaper tobacco variants due to the economic impact of COVID-19.
Imperial Tobacco Slovakia continued to dominate smoking tobacco in 2020, gaining further retail volume share due to its dominance of the large category of fine cut tobacco. With rising demand, smoking tobacco manufacturers were increasingly active in terms of promotional activities at points of sale at the end of the review period.
Cigars, cigarillos and smoking tobacco have a tax calendar which sets out excise tax rises, which currently extends to 2023. Whilst smoking tobacco is set to see excise tax increases year after year, cigars and cigarillos will witness a hike only in early 2023, giving them somewhat of an advantage over other tobacco products.
2020 was an exceptional year for cigarillos due to the one-off switch of consumers from flavoured cigarettes to flavoured cigarillos. This category is not expected to maintain the dynamic growth rate seen in this year moving forward, as it will feel the impact from weakening purchasing power amongst Slovak smokers and will not have the same demand from new consumers.
In the early forecast period, sales of cigars will be temporarily hampered by weaker disposable incomes as a result of the economic impact of the pandemic. However, partly due to seeing fewer price rises, cigar consumption is set to remain more resilient in the face of any price volatility compared with cigarettes.
