Retail volume sales of cigars, cigarillos and smoking tobacco are dominated by the latter, with very limited demand for cigars and particularly cigarillos. During 2021, there was strong growth in retail constant value sales (2021 prices) of smoking tobacco, but this was driven in large part by an increase in unit pricing.
Higher unit pricing also drove growth in retail constant value sales of cigars and particularly cigarillos – albeit from a very low base. Cigars and cigarillos are considered by many to be a less dangerous form of smoking than cigarettes, as the smoke is not inhaled.
Higher unit pricing led importers of cigars to switch to cheaper brands. As a result, Imperial Brands Plc’s Phillies lost significant value share during 2021, while Scandinavian Tobacco Group A/S’s Captain Black (which is smaller and less expensive) gained ground.
There will be robust growth in retail volume sales of cigars and cigarillos during the forecast period. The growing exposure of local consumers to Western popular culture will be an important driver of this, in addition to rapid population growth, urbanisation and an improving economic environment due to the elevated price of crude oil (the country’s main export).
The forecast period will also see strong growth in demand for pipe tobacco. Pipe tobacco will continue to be wider consumed (in combination with local herbs) as a cheaper alternative to cigarettes by price-sensitive local consumers – particularly as tax increases are set to make the latter more expensive.
The National Tobacco Control Act 2015 (implemented under the National Tobacco Control Regulations 2019) is not expected to have significant impact on rates of smoking tobacco consumption in Nigeria. As pipe tobacco is largely used in Nigeria as an ingredient in rolled, unpackaged, cigarettes, health warnings will have a minimal impact on demand.
