Cigarillos enjoyed dynamic growth in current value and retail volume terms in 2021. Part of this growth stemmed from the excise tax tariff on these products, which allows players to be more flexible with their pricing.
Although price was a factor, the main driver of the dynamic growth seen in cigarillos in 2020 and 2021 was the ban that was introduced on flavoured cigarettes as from 1 May 2020. While illicit trade cigarettes and e-vapour products took some of these sales, flavoured cigarillos also filled some of the gap left in the market with these products representing a legal alternative.
Philip Morris Lietuva UAB and Bennett Distributors remained the dominant players in cigarillos in volume terms in 2021, thanks to the popularity of their Chesterfield and Denim brands, respectively. These brands have a favourable reputation in terms of quality and are seen as flagship brands for cigarillos in general.
Continuing the trend seen in 2021, cigarillos is projected to continue recording strong growth in retail volume terms over the forecast period, with these products having successfully filled the gap left by flavoured cigarettes. Nonetheless, as seen across tobacco, further rises in excise taxes will put pressure on sales, with growth unlikely to reach 2021 levels again.
Cigars has a very limited consumer base with limited consumption occasions. Cigars are mainly smoked during some celebrations or for special events, while some wealthier consumers also smoke them on a slightly more regular basis in cigar houses.
Fine cut tobacco carries lower excise tax than cigarettes, making retail prices subsequently cheaper. Consumers generally perceive making hand-rolled cigarettes from fine cut tobacco to be a much more economical alternative to purchasing finished cigarettes.
