Cigarillos was the big winner in 2020, not because of COVID-19, but because the ban on menthol-flavoured cigarettes came into force in May 2020, with many of those smokers switching to price fighter menthol-flavoured cigarillos, as flavours are not banned in cigarillos. Players responded with several launches, with Winston launching berry/mint flavoured cigarillos in June 2020 and already this product is estimated to account for about 13% of cigarillo volume sales.
Bennett Distributors remained the dominant player in cigarillos in volume terms in 2020, thanks to the success of its brand, Denim. The brand has a favourable reputation in terms of quality and is a flagship brand for cigarillos in general.
Except for cigarillos, growth was stifled compared to pre-COVID-19 predictions, with heightened health concerns bought about by the outbreak of COVID-19, discouraging some consumers to smoke the same volume, while encouraging others to either quit smoking or migrate to alternatives such as heated tobacco.
Volume growth is expected to be positive for cigarillos, cigars and fine cut tobacco over the forecast period. Only pipe tobacco will register a decline in volume sales, as its downward trend continues.
Fine cut tobacco carries lower excise tax than cigarettes, making retail prices subsequently cheaper. Consumers generally perceive making hand-rolled cigarettes from fine cut tobacco to be a much more economical alternative to purchasing finished cigarettes.
Cigars remained a niche product area in Lithuania in 2020, however, both volume and value growth will continue to rise. Historically there is not a tradition of smoking cigars in the country, with most Lithuanians perceiving cigars as luxury items or as being primarily for celebratory occasions.
