Both cigars and cigarillos and smoking tobacco (influenced by the performance of fine cut tobacco) sustained retail volume declines as they continued to be impacted by high unit prices after two tax hikes in 2017, although the decline was much lower compared to the previous year.
The growing popularity of e-vapour products and the introduction of heated tobacco products has also had a negative impact on category sales. Both products offer consumers alternative methods of smoking that some perceive to be reduced harm despite a ban on marketing these products as such, while more discerning consumers are attracted by the novelty and innovation of heated tobacco products.
While overall smoking tobacco recorded declining sales in 2018 due to the poor performance of fine cut tobacco, the marginally cheaper format of pipe tobacco recorded the strongest performance overall, with positive current value and retail volume growth. However, this trend was not driven by traditional smoking pipes, which are deemed to be outdated, but by the increasing popularity of water pipe tobacco used for hookah, or smoking shisha or nargila in the country.
With a weak performance in 2018, cigars and cigarillos did not encourage any new launches or innovation by players. Scandinavian Tobacco Group strengthened its lead gaining share from smaller players, despite recording declining retail volume sales influenced by the category’s overall performance.
Although fine cut tobacco did not perform well in 2018, leading to a number of brands, including Domingo from Arc Kranj (for Japan Tobacco Inc) declining, the player has decided to attempt to replicate its success within cigarettes, by launching four variants of its Winston brand (including Winston Blue and Red RYO in 50g and 90g tins) and two variants of Camel (Camel Essential and Blue RYO in 30g pouches).
As the larger category compared to the niche of pipe tobacco (dominated by Scandinavian Tobacco Group), fine cut tobacco was comprised of a larger number of players in 2018, led by Tobacna Ljubljana with well-known brands Golden Virginia and Drum. However, while the leading player continued to gain retail volume share from close competitor Scandinavian Tobacco Group, both lost actual sales, although Tobacna Ljubljana’s West recorded positive growth.
