In 2020, cigars, cigarillos and smoking tobacco registered high volume and value growth despite the upheaval of the COVID-19 pandemic. All product areas in this category benefited from consumers trading down from more expensive cigarettes.
In 2020, cigars registered strong retail volume growth in Slovenia despite the recent implementation of tax rises and a poor performance before the outbreak of COVID-19. The home seclusion of the COVID-19 pandemic did not have a negative impact on cigars consumption in 2020, as habitual cigar smokers were willing to switch to at-home consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic when cigar clubs were closed.
Pipe tobacco is considered a relatively niche product in Slovenia, and the product area recorded declining retail volume sales at the end of the review period as consumers lost interest in pipe smoking. Despite its poor performance before the outbreak of COVID-19, however, the pandemic actually revived interest in pipe tobacco as social distancing measures and solitude made for better conditions for enjoying this niche product.
Retail volume and value growth was considerably boosted in cigars, cigarillos and smoking tobacco during the COVID-19 pandemic, but this is not expected to last into the forecast period. Although the effects of COVID-19 will persist in 2021, helping to retain a small degree of growth in the category, by 2022 all categories are projected to register negative retail volume growth.
Although cigarillos and smoking tobacco are usually cheaper than cigarettes, price rises will continue to impact sales of these product areas over the course of the forecast period. The continued price rises expected in tobacco over the forecast period are expected to have a negative impact on volume sales of cigarillos and smoking tobacco, even though many consumers switched to these products as cheaper alternatives.
Over the forecast period, the premium and luxury positioning of cigars is expected to work in favour of this product area, preventing heavier retail current value losses in line with other product areas in this category. Although all product areas look set to register negative CAGRs over the forecast period, the decline of cigars will be the least severe in retail current value terms.
