It was a mixed picture for cigars, cigarillo and smoking tobacco in 2020. While overall the product area registered a 4% increase in current value, there were winners and losers.
Within cigars, Azerbaijan-based Cahan Tobacco—which distributes significant international brands such as Romeo y Julieta, Cohiba and other brands of Corporación Habanos maintained its value share, ensuring that there was little change in the competitive landscape in 2020. The entrenchment of large players is likely to continue in cigars throughout the forecast period, although there may be opportunities for some growth of less expensive mass brands.
A saving grace for cigars and cigarillos is that neither are subject to excise duty increases and this helped their performance in 2020. While both are considered to be premium products.
Overall, the product will register positive volume growth over the forecast period, with cigars and cigarillos registering higher volume growth than smoking tobacco. Cigars and cigarillo will benefit from the opening of on-trade once COVID-19 is brought under control.
Due to the selective nature of consumers when it comes to buying cigars, cigarillos and smoking tobacco, tobacco specialist retailers remained the leading distribution channel for these products in 2020. Indeed, tobacco specialist retailers highlighted the products’ premium positioning and offered a wider range of products, boosting interest and sales.
While the government will continue to support initiatives to curtail tobacco use by consumers over the forecast period, it will, nevertheless, also continue to support ongoing efforts to buttress domestic tobacco players so that they may take share from the multinationals who currently dominate the product area. This should result in a sustained supply of tobacco products over the forecast period.
