In 2020, value sales of cigars, cigarillos and smoking tobacco grew by 1%, with a 10% volume decline for cigars and an 8% volume growth for smoking tobacco, driven by pipe tobacco. Cigarillos sales stopped in 2016, given the lack of demand for the product in the country.
While pipe tobacco sales were discontinued in 2019, imports of the products in smaller quantities compared to the review period led to retail value growth of 8% in 2020, with volume growth of 7%. The category’s retail sales are strongly dependent on the imports of Régie Nationale des Tabacs et des Allumettes (RNTA).
State-owned Régie Nationale des Tabacs et des Allumettes (RNTA) continued to dominate cigars, as it was the only player responsible for importing, manufacturing, and distributing these products in the country. Night In Tunisia was its leading brand in 2020, followed by Dougga and Utique.
COVID-19 is not expected to have a long-term impact on sales of cigars, with growth rates normalising and becoming positive again from 2021. Small fluctuations are expected in terms of growth throughout the forecast period, but none of the major fluctuations experienced in the review period is expected, with growth remaining positive each year, leading to a value CAGR of 6%.
Rising prices are expected to lead to higher current value growth than volume growth over the forecast period, with the government increasing taxation to help pay for the measures introduced to deal with COVID-19. Rising tobacco production costs are also predicted to impact average unit prices in cigars across the coming years.
State-owned Régie Nationale des Tabacs et des Allumettes (RNTA) continued to dominate sales of cigars in 2020, and this is set to remain the case across the forecast period. RNTA remains the unique player responsible for imports, manufacturing and distribution of these products in the country.
