Processed meat, seafood and alternatives to meat is expected to register positive volume growth, though volume growth will be lower than in 2020, as society gradually opens up in 2021, and less home cooking is done as a result. Chilled processed meat and poultry remains the biggest product area and is also expected to register volume growth in 2021, as it benefits from frequent barbecuing or shashliki, which is particularly popular during the pandemic as a way to socialise with people safely.
The biggest players in processed meat, seafood and alternatives to meat are expected to continue to remain Interrybflot, Myasna Fabryka Favoryt Plus, Globynsky, Ukrainsky Bekon, and Santa-Ukraine. Private label also has significant value share and was undoubtedly helped by the collapse in the Ukrainian currency’s value in the review period.
While meat substitutes are still low in terms of value sales, the product area is growing fast and has been buoyed by the appearance of numerous local players. Examples include a vegetable steak going under the brand Green Go, which is available through foodservice, a mincemeat brand called Eat Me At, Dreameat alternative meat burgers from producer AVK, dried alternative meat brand Vegurman and Bobinata, nuggets brand Wanted Vegan, vegan cutlets and sausages from Mr Grill.
Processed meat, seafood and alternatives to meat will register healthy constant value growth over the forecast period, as with society opening up again and consumers leading hectic lives, they will look for convenience. Processed seafood is a much smaller product area than processed meat, with low consumption per capita.
A degree of premiumisation will boost value sales of frozen red meat over the forecast period. There have already been several recent launches of more premium offerings, including frozen burgers from Peko, smoked tenderloin burgers from T-Bone, cutlets from Yamama and beef steaks from Myastoria.
It is anticipated that processed poultry will register higher growth in retail volume and value terms over the forecast period than processed red meat. More and more Ukrainian consumers will opt for processed poultry (chicken and turkey) over processed red meat as they perceive it as a healthier option, especially for children and the elderly who suffer from health complications.
