Given the negative impact the pandemic and the ongoing spike in inflation have had on purchasing power in Portugal, price-sensitivity will remain a key factor in consumer choices within processed meat, seafood and alternatives to meat over the forecast period. Nonetheless, it is expected consumers will continue to gravitate towards healthier and more eco-friendly options, which will in turn shape new product development strategies.
Many of the new products that appeared in meat and seafood substitutes over 2021-2022 look set to perform positively during the forecast period. These include Garden Gourmet’s Vuna, a 100% plant-based alternative to tuna introduced in March 2022.
Leading frozen food manufacturer Nomad Foods – the owner of brands such as Iglo and Findus – and US-based cellular aquaculture pioneer BlueNalu have recently teamed up to explore the development of fish and seafood products made from cells cultivated in a laboratory environment. Through the partnership, one the first of its kind in Europe, the two companies are collaborating on scientific and consumer research, while also working to secure the regulatory approval that will be required to bring such products to EU markets.
