Hong Kong was already developing a strong culture of fitness prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of gyms in Hong Kong grew rapidly during the review period, and gyms had also begun to offer a wider range of activities and classes beyond just weights and cardio, such as Muay Thai and yoga classes.
Despite also witnessing steep double-digit retail value declines, sports footwear demonstrated greater resilience than sports apparel during the COVID-19 crisis, with outdoor footwear witnessing the least severe falls within sportswear in 2020. These products benefited as more Hong Kongers took up outdoor activities such as running or walking, given the closure of gyms for long periods during the pandemic.
