Soft drinks in the country is traditionally dominated by high-sugar formulations, which over the years, and as health and wellness trends have evolved, led to volume declines as Brazilians migrated towards other products that better fit this new consumer profile. RTD tea is a category that both enjoys a health and wellness positioning, and is seen an indulgence, due to its high unit price, although the sugar content still needs to be addressed.
Carbonated RTD tea, and in particular the niche of kombucha, is predicted to record a solid performance in total volume terms over the forecast period. While this is primarily because demand is emerging from a relatively low base, the category’s performance will also be lifted by increasing awareness of the potential health benefits of kombucha amongst Brazilians.
COVID-19 has changed the relationship between consumers and distribution, not only shifting consumption from on-trade to off-trade, but also the dynamics of where, when, and how consumers purchase products. For instance, limited mobility during home seclusion drove up demand for RTD tea through e-commerce, with the latter recording triple-digit off-trade volume growth from 2020 to 2022, albeit from a low base.
