RTD tea is set to continue to experience solid growth over the forecast period, although this growth will come only from carbonated RTD tea and kombucha, as consumers will continue to abandon still RTD tea due to both a lack of innovative flavours and its high sugar content.
Kombucha is also expected to attract customers from outside of non-alcoholic drinks. With many New Zealanders looking to cut back on their consumption of alcoholic drinks as part of a post-pandemic detox, kombucha is expected to play a role as a – virtually – alcohol-free alternative.
Whilst the growing consumer preference for sugar-free beverages will be of benefit to carbonated RTD tea and kombucha, growth is expected to gradually slow over the forecast period, as other sugar-free beverages become both more popular and more commercially accessible across the forecast period. As some consumers will instead choose to purchase reduced sugar carbonates or reduced sugar energy drinks, not to mention the growing range of juices promoted as containing less sugar, the competition to attract health-conscious consumers will intensify.
