The sugar tax, implemented in 2019, has driven leading companies such as Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd and Yeo Hiap Seng (M) Bhd to reformulate their RTD tea’s sugar content – by either reducing the sugar content completely, or by replacing the sweetness with stevia.
Leading players such as Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd, Yeo Hiap Seng (M) Bhd, and Coca-Cola Bottlers (M) Sdn Bhd, are likely to expand distribution of their RTD tea to forecourt retailers and convenience stores, with larger shelf space occupancy and a wider variety of products displayed. The expansion of convenience stores, such as Family Mart and 99 Speedmart, are thus also expected to help drive sales in RTD tea.
Sustainability is another trend expected to develop momentum over the forecast period, with leading players in RTD tea expected to join forces to introduce fully recyclable packaging. Indeed, major brands such as Nestlé, Coca-Cola, Mondelez, F&N and Unilever, are joining forces to drive the sustainability agenda in Malaysia, via a new alliance that will tackle plastic food and beverage packaging concerns.
