RTD tea is a niche product area within Bolivia and for this reason was not as strongly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 compared to other product areas within soft drinks. Although RTD tea saw current value and volume decline in 2020, sales remained fairly similar due to the smaller size of the product area.
The health and wellness trend is one of the main drivers of growth for RTD tea. Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the health and wellness trend has been gathering further pace which will only benefit RTD drinks.
RTD tea shows a monopolistic behaviour, largely dominated by the company Pil Andina SA with its brand Refresca-T. This is the only brand that has a presence in all distribution channels since its distributor is the leader in the country within dairy, which gives it the upper hand when distributing other products.
Over the forecast period, RTD tea has a bright future, especially among millennials and gen Z who are always willing to try new products, especially if they are marketed as healthier. The main challenge for RTD tea will be how to successfully promote the benefits of this type of product, which is currently unknown to a lot of Bolivian consumers.
The traditional channel in Bolivia is mainly made up of popular street markets and small neighbourhood stores and represents the highest sale volumes within soft drinks overall. Currently, within RTD tea, there is only one brand that supplies to the traditional channel, making this an opportunity for emerging RTD tea brands in the years to come.
Given the forecasted performance of RTD tea and a growing interest in producers with functional benefits, it is expected that the product area will see innovations that include super foods, proteins and other health benefits in the coming years. This will be a direct result of the health and wellness trend that is set to gather even further pace thanks to the pandemic and overall raised health awareness.
