2023 is predicted to see even slower growth for ready meals in retail volume and current value terms, in line with the stronger return to foodservice in Chile due to pent-up demand after home seclusion, prompting many Chileans to eat out more regularly. In addition, with children returning to school with a more regular schedule, parents will need to prepare fewer ready meals during the day.
When COVID-19 began, many consumers around the world developed a strong consciousness of their health and nutrition, and the Chilean population was no exception. As people saw the virus having devastating effects on health, not only in sedentary people, but also in professional athletes, many started to make changes to their daily habits, such as eating healthier foods and exercising regularly.
One factor that could prevent the stronger growth of ready meals at the beginning of the forecast period is the high unit prices that are common across the category. The economic environment is expected to remain difficult heading into the forecast period, which will continue to subdue consumers’ purchasing power.

Meals and Soups
This is the aggregation of ready meals, pizza, food kits, prepared salads, and soup. Includes: These are products that have had recipe 'skills' added to them by the manufacturer, resulting in a high degree of readiness, completion and convenience. Food kits is an exception where typically the extent of preparation is much shorter than other meal products; includes meal kits where consumers are to put together pre-portioned ingredients and cook with the guidance of recipe cards. Ready meals are generally accepted to be complete meals that require few or no extra ingredients. However, in the case of shelf stable ready meals, the term also encompasses meal 'centres’; for food kits, they do require a degree of cooking and preparation. As such, some meals may require cooking (ready-to-cook); others may simply need reheating, prior to serving (ready-to-eat). Excludes: Any products sold unpackaged and/or by weight, including food sold from a retail deli counter.See All of Our Definitions
