Many ready meals manufacturers are introducing paper and cardboard packaging for their products, with this trend also being seen within prepared salads. For example, Florette’s Bio and Responsible ranges of prepared salads now come in a recyclable paper bag, although it still has a transparent window to allow consumers to see the product.
Frozen ready meals for one is a small but growing area, with the typical consumer of these products being aged under 35. The majority of products in the market are designed for at least two people, but companies such as Findus France SAS have found some success by launching frozen meals for one.
With demand for packaged soup being generally under pressure, the leading players in shelf stable soup have taken the initiative in terms of revamping the image of the category in an effort to ensure that it continues to appeal to a new generation of consumers. Indeed, anyone paying attention to the French retail shelves where soup is displayed will have noticed that the liquid brick containers that replaced metal food cans some years ago have in turn been replaced by glass bottles and jars that are designed to lend these products a premium image that mimics the appearance of chilled soup.

Meals and Soups
This is the aggregation of ready meals, pizza, food kits, prepared salads, and soup. Includes: These are products that have had recipe 'skills' added to them by the manufacturer, resulting in a high degree of readiness, completion and convenience. Food kits is an exception where typically the extent of preparation is much shorter than other meal products; includes meal kits where consumers are to put together pre-portioned ingredients and cook with the guidance of recipe cards. Ready meals are generally accepted to be complete meals that require few or no extra ingredients. However, in the case of shelf stable ready meals, the term also encompasses meal 'centres’; for food kits, they do require a degree of cooking and preparation. As such, some meals may require cooking (ready-to-cook); others may simply need reheating, prior to serving (ready-to-eat). Excludes: Any products sold unpackaged and/or by weight, including food sold from a retail deli counter.
