While soy drinks is a product category with a much longer history in the Dominican Republic than other plant-based milk, sales growth in soy drinks has for many years been considerably lower than the dynamic growth rates being registered in other plant-based milk. Soy drinks remain more popular than any individual product categorised under other plant-based milk; however almond milk in particular is emerging as a strong contender to usurp soy drinks as the most popular type of plant-based milk in the country.
As mentioned above, local brands are increasingly making a big impression in plant based dairy as Grupo Rica and other major domestic dairy producers increasingly recognise the importance of responding to the major consumer trend away from traditional bovine dairy products and towards plant-based dairy. While imported brands are among the most prominent names in the category, it is only a matter of time before the products gain the advantage, not least because of the lower prices that local brands are able to charge.
One factor that could stand in the way of the development of plant-based dairy during the forecast period is the high unit prices that such products tend to carry in comparison with standard dairy products. At a time of high inflation, many consumers are very mindful of their food expenditure and it is becoming increasingly common for consumers in the Dominican Republic to take every step possible to eliminate all unnecessary spending.
