Plant-based dairy is set to perform positively throughout the forecast period, with overall retail volume growth expected to surpass that recorded during the review period. While growth rates will be skewed somewhat as sales emerge from a relatively low base, demand should remain buoyant as health concerns drive more Cameroonians to migrate from traditional dairy products to plant-based alternatives.
While Cameroon’s annual raw milk production output is increasing, it is still approximately 120,000 tonnes short of meeting the needs of dairy manufacturers in the country, many of which remain heavily dependent on imported raw materials. With prices for the latter expected to continue rising in the short-to-medium term due to inflationary pressures fuelled by the global recovery from the pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, over the forecast period it is likely more companies will follow the example of Camlait and start producing plant-based alternatives in an effort to reduce costs and improve their margins.
Rising health awareness among Cameroonians will remain the primary driver of migration from traditional dairy products to plant-based varieties over the forecast period. However, it is expected this trend will also be supported by growing concerns about environmental sustainability, which have recently become more pronounced due to the fallout of the pandemic and the increasingly visible effects of global warming.
