Over the forecast period, plant-based dairy is projected to see further strong retail volume and value (constant 2022 prices) growth. While all product areas are anticipated to record solid growth, “other” milk alternatives is anticipated to perform best, with soy drinks continuing to lose favour.
Consumer concerns about the sugar content in some plant-based milks is pushing manufacturers to develop and launch sugar-free plant-based milk. In this vein, towards the end of the review period, Atlante launched a line of plant-based milk based on soy, almond, rice, oat and coconut milks without added sugars.
While still a niche product area in 2022, plant-based cheese is rapidly gaining in popularity as Italian consumers become more mindful of the negative health effects of traditional dairy products, especially cow’s milk and cow’s milk cheese and yoghurt, while there is also growing concern for animal welfare and the planet. It is a dynamic category with good potential for growth.
