While processed fruit and vegetables is expected to register positive volume growth in 2021, it will be lower than volume growth in 2020. In 2020, there was a high degree of stockpiling, especially of shelf stable fruit and vegetables and with these stocks still not fully used up in 2021, this has dampened value growth.
Fruit and vegetables have been very popular products in Ukraine for a long time. Previously, most vegetables were grown at home, but now the situation is changing due to hectic lifestyles in urban areas and the declining rural population.
Within frozen vegetables, vegetables mixes are losing value share to single vegetables, such as green beans, spinach and peas, as consumers increasingly prefer to use a single vegetable for example for making savoury pies with spinach or for steaming green beans, as a healthier way of cooking.
Processed fruit and vegetables will register moderate constant value growth over the forecast period and with concerns about the economy over the forecast period, private label will gain value share, due to its affordability. Private label is being actively developed by retailers in processed fruit and vegetables in Ukraine, with some of its biggest shares being in frozen fruit, shelf stable fruit, shelf stable tomatoes and frozen processed vegetables.
Demand for frozen fruit and vegetables will be driven by the health and wellness trend over the forecast period. Thanks to shock freezing technology, frozen fruit and vegetables are known to retain their vitamins and microelements that usually get destroyed in the heating process in the case of shelf stable fruit and vegetables.
As busier lifestyles leave less time for cooking, Ukrainians are increasingly choosing packaged food products that can reduce the amount of time and effort required to prepare main courses, salads, desserts etc. For example, whereas it was once common to use fresh fruit to make compote, a popular local dessert, many consumers now opt for the convenience of shelf stable fruit products instead.
